Hello Readers,
First of all, lets set the scene... "Anna Hazare"!!!
I'm sure that rang a few bells. The first thing that comes to one's mind on hearing Anna or Hazare, is corruption!
For those of you who are unaware, Anna Hazare (known as a Social Activist in India), had drafted a bill called the "Jan Lokpal Bill" (which in English, means citizens' ombudsman bill). You can always read up more about this on Wikipedia!
I am not a blogger, (in fact, this is my first blog!) and what made me write this is the sight of people gathering in large masses, unfortunately giving up their day to day activities for a *supposedly* united struggle towards a corruption free country.
Although I will not argue on the fact that people are united on the aim (which is simply beautiful), there is a major flaw in this mission!
I get text messages on my cell phone every half-hour which shows large numbers like 1 lac or even up to 10 lac people being involved in protests all over the country. It is a real shame that out of these, lesser than 1% of the people have actually gone through the draft of (the points proposed by) the Jan Lokpal Bill.
Time to take a bolder approach....
Did any of you, take a step back and actually think why no one ever came up with something as simple as this every before? The truth is that people have, and to a certain extent have achieved what they stood for. But why is this particular campaign gaining so much popularity?
Well, to answer that one, let me introduce the *Mass* concept. I am sure that most of you like something on Facebook which has been liked by, say thousand people before you? Or... say, most of your friends? That is certainly how any event gains popularity! It is only difficult to get the initial *likes*.
I'm not saying that someone tipped off a thousand people with a buk each to like something (although it is really clear what I mean when I say 'I'm not saying that'...), because you might argue with me saying that the mission here is valid, necessary, and un-avoidable. I certainly agree!
But wait, me agreeing or not.... Does it make a difference?
Even though most of us (the people who think know better) feel that the government is simply filled with politics and does not help much, we gotta admit that those people high in the government can simply out think us with sheer experience. So why aren't they accepting the proposal?
The right answer here, is that they are the ones who are actually looking at a practical outcome of the acceptance of this proposal. Let me elaborate on something that I know here....
If the bill was accepted, within a month, Black Money (or so its commonly called) worth more than 1/10th of the country will have to be accounted! Where do you think this money will finally be routed to? All this bank will be routed to BANKS! (which includes the World Bank).
This gives rise to a bigger question. "What is the need to hurry up on something so big?"
While some might simply support it as "The Right thing to do", do they realize the economic chaos that will be brought upon? If fears of an onset of recession due to American mistakes are not enough, this will simply topple the Indian economy. With the Indian economy upside down, a world-wide recession is almost inevitable. Oh surely, I might be wrong on this one.... So then, why aren't the bigger corporate leaders in support of this mission?
So now that makes two groups who don't support this mission yet. The Government, and the Corporate Giants.
Now lets take a look at a third angle. The initial request of the Government was to slowly involve everyone under the Lokpal bill, starting with smaller ones and finally reaching the PM. Why was this request not even considered? Why is there an urgency to pass this bill at the earliest, even after knowing the consequences (one of which i have just stated above)?
This brings into question the very leaders of this mission! Although there exists no proof, do you think it is hard to pocket a very small percentage of this HUGE amount of *Black Money* that is going to surface due to the acceptance of the proposal? (Oh no! I don't think so!) What else could be the reason for the urgency??
The Government, an intelligent one, having considered the above case, proposed to keep the top, i.e PM and the CJI outside the bill, in order to bring back some order, if loopholes, instead of creating a curroption free country, amplified the exisiting situation. I'm pretty sure it will be really hard to even become the only corrupt person, the PM, with the very people under him always under the watch of the Lokpal bill!!! But.... Why was this also rejected?
Something that adds to the confusion here, is the non-inclusion of previous partners - those who worked with Anna Hazare on his previous campaigns.
What pains me the most, is seeing commoners carrying candles protesting against something (something, but they don't know what the something is for!). Commoners writing on white papers - "Anna, we will serve you!".... Commoners taking part in stampedes, caring lesser for their health.... All this without an understanding of the consequences.
Slow and Steady wins the race! The CBI, the Lokayukta, and other government agencies created for the very purpose of reducing corruption, have only recently proved that they can in fact make a big difference. Why cant this just go on? And eventually, the country becomes corruption free anyway, but, without having to undergo economical meltdowns!
Having typed all this, I want to bring to your attention that, I am no professional in all this, and can be wrong in many ways. And if I am wrong, I would be happy to receive some constructive criticism, thereby enlightening me. (If you feel that I am mostly, or even partly right, I strongly urge you to publicize this, and stop a meaningless waste of time of millions of people)
Please do understand, that this in no way was meant to insult any person or group of persons.
